The Georgia State Film Tax Credit Incentive: Why TV Shows & Films Shoot in GA

Theres a good reason you are seeing the Georgia Peach logo at the end of some of the most popular television shows and movies. The state of Georgia film tax credit and incentive program provides up to 30% on production expenditures in transferable tax credits. This incentive can be applied to those who qualify in film, television series, commercials, music videos, animation, and game development.

Georgia’s Entertainment Industry Investment Act gives an initial 20 percent tax credit for companies spending $500,000 or more on production and post-production in Georgia. This can be all in one single production or on multiple production projects and also applies to both local and out-of-town hires.  An additional 10 percent tax credit is then given to projects that include the Georgia State promotional logo.  Georgia even goes as far as to allow projects that have little or no Georgia Tax liability to transfer or sell their tax credits.

Projects can also take advantage of the Georgia’s sales and use tax exemption. This provides a point of purchase sales tax exemption that could save projects up to 8% on purchases and rentals in the State of Georgia.

The tax incentive offered by Georgia is one of the best in the industry garnering responses such as that by Broderick Johnson, producer of The Blind Side, stating “the magnitude of Georgia’s tax break is one of the best, if not the best in the country.” With responses like this, film and entertainment production in Georgia has been in a steady incline in recent years.
